Nicol Sespico was born on August 12, 1982, a happy and healthy baby. She appeared to be developing normally, yet at 12 months, Nicol never responded to her name, she had little eye contact, her muscles were flaccid and she made no attempt to walk, point, verbally communicate or use language. I knew something was wrong. I expressed my concerns to the professionals only to be told that I was over-reacting. I had a gut feeling to do more in an effort to understand this peaceful, loving child. I couldn’t explain it, but my determination to help Nicol was a drive, a passionate force. I couldn’t give up. I had to trust myself.

 

Very little was known about autism in 1982. The challenges to educate and advocate for a person with autism still continue today. Although each challenge brought new knowledge and more options for the journey, each transition, developmental stage and change brought new challenges. Being persistent and having Nicol as the focus keeps the momentum of the journey alive. Never say you or a person with autism is limited in what can be learned or developed. Learning can continue even though limits are placed on people with special needs. This book enabled us to learn more about the disorder of autism from one that is tragic to one that is hopeful — one that will build on the strengths not the weaknesses of a child with autism. Most of all it is about educating from the HEART and knowing Angels are around you.

 

Through persistence, research, support of family and friends and the opening of our minds and hearts, many doors opened for us which in turn led to many new challenges and choices. Follow our Journey of Discovery in Nicol’s Way
